SPEAKER_01: Today we're talking about a literary giant credited with writing one of the world's
SPEAKER_03: most important works of fiction. Meet our pioneer of the day, Murasaki Shikibu. Murasaki Shikibu was a famed Japanese Murasaki Shikibu was a famed Japanese novelist, poet, and lady-in-waiting at the Imperial Court during the Heian Period. For those of you who, like me, may not know what it is, the Heian Period ran from 794 to 1185 CE. It was the era of Japanese history in which Buddhist, Daoist, and other Chinese influences were at their height in Japan, particularly at the Imperial Court in Kyoto, which was also at its apex. The period is known for an abundance of incredible art, and especially poetry and literature. One of the most important pieces to come out of the period was what's often credited as the world's first novel, Murasaki's masterpiece novel, The Tale of Genji.
SPEAKER_01: The work was written between about 1000 to 1012 CE.
SPEAKER_03: That's about 700 years before the novel would become a relevant literary form in the West. Little is really known about Murasaki. We don't even know her real name. Murasaki Shikibu is a descriptive name used for writing. What we do know is that she was unusual. She was literate in Chinese, which was the written language of Japanese writers. Which was the written language of Japanese government, despite the fact that during the Heian period, women were generally excluded from learning that language. Murasaki's father deserves some serious credit. He taught his daughter to read and write, despite tradition. Murasaki showed a talent for Chinese as a child and had a voracious appetite for reading the Chinese classics. Murasaki got married in her mid to late 20s and quickly gave birth to a daughter. Her husband passed away just two years into the marriage. It's believed that Murasaki began writing The Tale of the Genji during her short marriage or just after she was widowed. Her reputation as a writer grew during her widowhood and around 1005 CE, she was invited to serve as a lady-in-waiting to the Japanese empress at the imperial court in Kyoto. As a lady-in-waiting, Murasaki was provided with all the luxuries of the court. That afforded her plenty of time to continue writing and allowed her to observe scenes of court life that proved useful for her novel. After five or six years at the imperial court in Kyoto, Murasaki moved with the empress to Lake Biwa, where she lived the rest of her life in relative quiet. Compared to other writers and artists throughout history, Murasaki was recognized pretty quickly as a literary genius. Within a decade of its completion, The Tale of Genji was being sold throughout Japan, and within a century, it was celebrated as a key piece of Japanese literature. Still, it wasn't till 1933 that The Tale of Genji was translated to English in a six-volume edition. Suffice it to say, it's not a quick read. Scholars today continue to be fascinated by Murasaki's work and recognize it as the artistic pinnacle of the Heian era, not to mention a fascinating look into the realities of Japanese court society. Tune in tomorrow for the story of another incredible pioneer. We'll be heading back to the Western Hemisphere to check out the story of Mary Shad Cary. Special thanks to Liz Kaplan, who's my favorite sister and the research brain behind this amazing collection of women. Talk to you tomorrow.
