SPEAKER_03: Hello, from Wonder Media Network, I'm Jenny Kaplan, and this is Womanica. This month we're talking about mischief makers, oddballs, chameleons, and non-conformists, queens of quick wit. Today's mischief maker was known by a few names, all of them related to Moonlight. She refused to marry any man unless he could beat her in wrestling. But like Moonlight, she was impossible to pin down. Let's talk about Kootayune.
SPEAKER_05: Kootayune was born around 1260 on the plains of Mongolia, where the land stretches out to meet the sky.
SPEAKER_03: Her great-great-grandfather was Genghis Khan, the famed Mongol leader who built the largest empire to ever exist. Kootayune was raised among her 14 brothers and grew strong in the traditional Mongol sports of archery, hunting, and hunting. She was a very young woman, and she was a very young woman who was a very young woman. She grew strong in the traditional Mongol sports of archery, horseback riding, and wrestling. But wrestling was where she really excelled. Mongolian wrestling in some ways is straightforward. There are two wrestlers whose goal is to bring their opponent to the ground. To do so, they grab each other's arms and waist. As Kootayune's father became more powerful, more men stepped forward for his only daughter's hand in marriage. But Kootayune wasn't interested in marriage, so she set a challenge. Her suitors would first have to beat her in a wrestling match. Kootayune was strong and tall and had been fighting in public matches since she was young. But since she was still a woman, how hard could it be? Suitors would often pledge between 10 and 100 horses to compete for her hand in marriage, depending on who's telling the story. Kootayune would keep the horses if she won. By the time Marco Polo arrived on the Mongolian steppes around 1275, Kootayune had amassed a herd of 10,000 horses. In Mongol culture, athletic victory was about more than just winning. It was sacred. It was a sign that the athlete was blessed by the spirits, and it made Kootayune the obvious choice to accompany her father, Kaidukhan, into battle. Kootayune became known for a specific tactic. She and her father would ride into battle together side by side. When the enemy got close enough, bam, she'd take off on her horse and go straight for a man at the front of the pack. She'd grab him off his horse and carry him back to her father. Marco Polo described it as a hawk setting upon a bird. Despite her dominance on the battlefield, Kootayune was not immune to gossip. Rumors began spreading that she and her father were incestuously involved, and that was why she refused to marry. So Kootayune picked her own husband, no challenge required, and she remained undefeated in wrestling. After her father died, Kootayune became the general of his army while one of her brothers took over his throne. Kootayune died in 1306 when she was around 45 years old. It's not clear what caused her death, but rumors swirled that she'd been killed as part of a sinister plot. After her death, Kootayune's story reached Europe as part of Marco Polo's stories from the road. She grew into something of a myth, a woman too strong to truly be real. Versions of her story inspired books and plays and, most famously, an opera, Turandot. In Mongolia, Kootayune is remembered in a different way. At the annual wrestling games, men wear a long-sleeved vest with an open chest. It's clear to everyone that he is in fact a man. When the victor emerges, he stands up and slowly spins around, his arms outstretched like a bird. He's celebrating his win, yes, but he's also honoring Kootayune, the great woman wrestler who never lost a match. All month, we're talking about mischief makers.
