Goddesses: Huitaca

Episode Summary

The podcast episode is about the goddess Huitaca from Colombian mythology. Huitaca was a rebel goddess who represented the moon, darkness, sexuality, and freedom. According to legend, Huitaca was in opposition to the god Bochica, who represented law, morality, and self-restraint. While Bochica taught people skills like spinning cotton and making music, he also preached against war, idolatry, and indulgence. Huitaca embodied the vices Bochica rallied against - drunkenness, lust, and pleasure. One day, Huitaca caused a great flood in a fit of rage, destroying the land and killing many people. Bochica stopped the flood by breaking a rock to create a waterfall. He then punished Huitaca by turning her into an owl, the animal she is still associated with today. Huitaca can be seen as a cautionary tale about straying from the path of morality. But she also represents female power and sexuality, which may have seemed sinful to the patriarchal society. Spanish colonizers likely reconstructed her story to paint indigenous people as uncivilized. Today, Huitaca continues to be reimagined as a goddess of mystery, dance, ecstasy, and hidden knowledge. Nearly 500 years later, she still captivates people as a rebel deity who opposed strict rules and embraced freedom and pleasure.

From Wonder Media Network, I'm Jenny Kaplan, and this is Womanaka. This month we're talking about goddesses, mythical figures who've shaped culture, history, and imagination around the world. Today we're talking about a rebel goddess. She's the moon and all the mystery that can occur in the dark. History has tried to paint her as an evil temptress rather than a symbol of rebellion. Let's talk about Wetaka. Between 600 and 1600, in the area we know today as Colombia, the Muisca, or Chibcha, civilization prospered. They lived in the high Andean plains and created intricate gold work. According to tradition, the society was founded by Bochica, a messenger who brought morality, laws, and crafts to the people of the area. Bochica lectured against war and against worshipping idols. He taught the people how to spin cotton, create music, and build houses. But above all else, he taught the importance of morality. That meant strict rules about behavior, morals, and self-indulgence. In opposition to Bochica stood Wetaka. She was a personification of the moon and of all the revelry that comes with the night. Drunkenness, lust, gains, and pleasure were all her domain. She represented the perils Bochica rallied against. Bochica and Wetaka existed in tenuous harmony for a long time, until finally she took her games too far. One day, in a fit of rage, Wetaka raised a flood. It tore through the plateaus, through the fields, drowning scores of people and the land they called home. Bochica's followers called for help. He raised his magical stick and broke an enormous rock in two. All the water that Wetaka had summoned rushed out through the new opening, a 400-foot waterfall known today as Tekendama Falls. After this transgression, Bochica punished Wetaka. He turned her into a white owl, the bird she's still associated with today. Wetaka could be understood as a cautionary tale. The boogeyman of what happens if one strays from the path of morality. But from a slightly different angle, she could be seen as a rebel goddess. An opponent of the straight and narrow path Bochica extolled. The Wetaka we know today also may not be the Wetaka the Muisca knew. With Spanish colonization, many indigenous folktales and mythologies were reconstructed. Made to paint pre-Hispanic civilizations as uncouth and licentious, much like Wetaka herself. In other interpretations of Wetaka's mythology, she is the manifestation of the primal feminine force. It's from this intense feminine power that she gains her influence over sexuality and freedom. For patriarchal societies that privileged figures like Bochica, Wetaka's powers may have appeared more as sin. Her sexuality as lust, and her temper and rebelliousness as vice, turning a goddess of freedom into a sinner. Today, people continue to reimagine Wetaka as a goddess of the unknown. She might represent the hidden knowledge of the night, the magic of dance and ecstasy. Nearly half a millennium later, Wetaka continues to enchant us. All month we're talking about goddesses.
