From WonderMedia Network, I'm Jenny Kaplan, and this is Wamanica. This month we're talking about goddesses, mythical figures who've shaped culture, history, and imagination around the world. She rides in a golden chariot, pulled by black cats. Her falcon feather cloak and golden hair flowing in the wind. She's impossible to control, a goddess who loves and fights with equal passion. This is the story of Freya. The goddess Freya was born to the Vanir family of Norse gods. Freya and her twin brother are fertility gods, with Freya also ruling over love, beauty, and gold. She's known for her love of luxury, as well as carnal pleasure. One account of Freya's love of jewels is when she received her prize necklace, the Briesingamen. While wandering the land, Freya spotted a group of dwarves working in a cave. When she peered her head inside, she saw the dwarves were crafting a beautiful necklace. Freya had to have this necklace, so she asked if they would give it to her. They agreed, but under the condition that she spend the night with each of them. Freya consented. The Norse trickster god Loki discovered the affair and quickly told Odin, the high-ranking god of war. At the time, Freya was Odin's concubine, and he disapproved of her infidelity. As punishment for her affair, he demanded that Loki steal the necklace while she slept. When Freya awoke, she realized her prize was missing and went to Odin. He was furious with how she'd earned the necklace, and said he would only return it to her under the following circumstances. Two kings would go to battle with one another. Freya would cast a spell so that each time one of the king's numbers fell in battle, they would spring up and fight again. That would go on until a Christian man of a particular stature went into the battle. Only when that man went into battle to smite them would the people stay dead. Freya obliged. Another myth tells the story of Freya's deep love for her husband, Odur. Odur frequently went on long journeys, leaving Freya alone. Distraught, Freya would wander, searching for him, leaving a trail of golden tears in her wake. While Freya's known for her love of love, she also was known to spend time on the battlefield. Freya is the ruler of the Folkvanger, the meadow-like afterlife for slain Vikings. She would descend on her chariot pulled by two black cats and bring the fallen warriors to Folkvanger. Because she led the dead to the afterlife, she's seen as the head of the Valkyries. Freya also had connections to the occult. She was the first to introduce other gods to Seder, a type of magic that both told and shaped the future. Viking women who practiced Seder were known as Volvas, seers. Freya was their ruling goddess. She altered the future to prevent disaster or deliver doom. She even used her falcon feather cloak to transform at will. Freya is still the most prominent goddess in Norse mythology. Her imagery has been used throughout art and literature, with many believing her myth was the inspiration for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Though some scholars would argue that Freya was not separate from Odin's wife Frigg, Freya's blend of strength, hedonism, and beauty is uniquely her own. All month we're talking about goddesses.
