Goddesses: Chalchiuhtlicue

Episode Summary

The Aztec water goddess Chalchiuhtlicue was created alongside the rain god Tlaloc shortly after the world's creation. She rules over freshwater sources like lakes, streams, and rivers. Humans rely on her for healthy crops and to avoid drought. She also watches over those giving birth, newborns, and fishermen. For a time, Chalchiuhtlicue was the sun during the fourth cycle of the world's creation. She nurtured the earth and kept it fertile for humans. But the god Tezcatlipoca grew envious and spread rumors to turn the other gods against her. Heartbroken, Chalchiuhtlicue cried for 52 years, flooding the earth. The humans of that age turned into fish to survive. Like water itself, Chalchiuhtlicue could be kind but also dangerous. She could guide irrigation or cause flash floods. She is associated with death from waterborne illness and infant mortality. Souls who die from water go to her afterlife realm Tlalocan. The folk legend La Llorona connects to Chalchiuhtlicue. The goddess never stopped loving humans, even those from the fourth age she drowned, who became the fish in her waters. She remains an important figure in Aztec mythology and folklore.

From Wonder Media Network, I'm Jenny Kaplan, and this is Womanaka. This month we're talking about goddesses, mythical figures who've shaped culture, history, and imagination around the world. Today we're talking about the water goddess of Nahua, or Aztec mythology. A goddess who loved her creations so much that she drowned them in her affections. Please meet Ch'a'l'chi'ut'li'kwe. Shortly after the world's creation, the first four divinities looked over their work. They'd created the calendar to keep time, the earth to house civilization, maize to keep them fed. But one important detail, one that would give life to the inhabitants of this earth, was still missing. They needed water. The four divinities banded all of their powers together to answer the call. And so, Ch'a'l'chi'ut'li'kwe came into the world. She didn't come alone. The rain god, Tlaloc, was created alongside her. Beyond their dual creation, these two deities share a strong bond. Though time has eroded exactly what kind of relationship that was, siblings, lovers, or parent and child. Ch'a'l'chi'ut'li'kwe's domain is primarily freshwater, lakes, lagoons, streams, and rivers. Humans rely on her to water their plants and keep them from thirst. Her grace ensures healthy crops, and her ire ensures drought. She also watches over those in childbirth, newborn children, and fishermen. But there was also a time when Ch'a'l'chi'ut'li'kwe was the sun. When the Aztec gods made the world, they did so more than once. We live in the fifth cycle of creation. Time and time again, gods took the place of the sun and built up the earth only to destroy it. The god Tezcatlipoca tried first to disastrous results. Then came Quetzalcoatl, who blew away his own work with his wind powers. The third time around, Tlaloc was the sun, and by the end he sent down fire to burn away all of creation. The fourth iteration of the world was Ch'a'l'chi'ut'li'kwe's. She was nurturing, good-natured, and inclined towards the people who roamed the planet. She made the land fertile for them, and kept them and their crops well-watered. She was kind. But Tezcatlipoca had envied every sun god after him. He'd already riled up two sitting sun gods, enough that they'd destroy their own creations. But his usual tactics weren't working on Ch'a'l'chi'ut'li'kwe. She loved her world very much, and that's how he incited the end of the fourth cycle. Ch'a'l'chi'ut'li'kwe liked those humans an awful lot, didn't she? Maybe too much. Maybe Ch'a'l'chi'ut'li'kwe was just faking it. Maybe she was only kind so she would receive the humans' adoration in return. These are the rumors of discord Tezcatlipoca spread. When she caught word, Ch'a'l'chi'ut'li'kwe was heartbroken. It wasn't true. Her fellow gods' words wounded her deeply. So deeply, she started to cry. And cry and cry. The water goddess's tears gushed for decades. Fifty-two years. She wept for so long, her tears turned to blood. The fourth sun hadn't just watered her earth. She'd drowned it. The people of the fourth age turned into fish to survive. The very things that made Ch'a'l'chi'ut'li'kwe so powerful caused her downfall. The same is true for water. It makes crops grow, but it can be dangerous in sudden delusions. In the arid climate that spanned the Aztec empire, water could be especially fickle. Ch'a'l'chi'ut'li'kwe could guide water along complex irrigation canals, or she could suddenly call down a flash flood. For that same reason, Ch'a'l'chi'ut'li'kwe is also associated with death, those who die on the water from waterborne illnesses and children who die in their first year of life. She and Tlaloc welcome these souls to their afterlife realm, Tlalocan. The water goddess never stopped loving the humans of the fourth age. According to the mythology, those people live on as the fish who inhabit her freshwater sources. Humans never stopped loving her either. Ch'a'l'chi'ut'li'kwe lives on in legends and modern folklore. For example, the Mexican folk ghost story of La Llorona is associated with the Aztec goddess. All month we're talking about goddesses.
