SPEAKER_01: Hello, from Wonder Media Network, I'm Jenny Kaplan, and this is Womanica. This month we're talking about folk heroes, women whose lives and stories took on mythic proportions. Today's Womanican is a character who was not only the subject of a folk tale, she was also a gifted storyteller. She crafted a new tale each night for 1,001 nights to enrapture an evil sultan and save her own life. Let's meet Scheherazade. Scheherazade's story takes place in ancient Persia. She and her sister Dunyazad lived with their father under the rule of a powerful sultan. One night, the sultan returned to his kingdom after being away on a trip, only to see his wife in bed with another man. Heartbroken and wrathful, he beheaded them right then and there. The sultan then traveled to his brother's nearby estate in hopes of companionship. His brother was nowhere to be found. What he did find was his brother's wife in the garden, having an orgy under the moonlight. The sultan returned to his kingdom enraged. His wife and his brother's wife had both been unfaithful. He wanted revenge. To do this, he'd marry a new woman each day, then in the morning he would behead them before they could betray him, like his wife had. In the evening, he'd move on to his next bride and victim. Families fled in order to save their daughters from the sultan's vicious plot, but Scheherazade and her sister stayed put. Scheherazade was beautiful, kind, and cunning. She had a plan that would save the women of the kingdom, and to carry it out, she had to face the sultan head on. Scheherazade's father was despondent. Against his wishes and in spite of the danger, she married the sultan. On her wedding night, she went to the sultan with tears in her eyes. She knew she'd be executed. Couldn't she see her sister one last time? The sultan took pity and granted Dunyazad permission to come to the palace. An hour before dawn, Scheherazade began telling her sister and the sultan a story. The story was so captivating and enchanting, she had her audience gripped until the sun rose. She had survived her first night as the sultan's bride. She asked if she could stay alive for one more day so she could finish her story in the evening. Thus began Scheherazade's bedtime story routine. Each night, Scheherazade stopped her story right at the most suspenseful part so that the sultan would be enticed to hear the conclusion and spare her life. The next evening, she'd finish that story and start another. This went on for 1,001 nights. Scheherazade's imaginative tales were magical and adventurous, including brave sailors, conniving thieves, talking animals, and magical objects. And as she masterfully spun her tales, other women of the kingdom were spared. On the 1,000-and-second night, Scheherazade announced she had no more stories to tell. She knew the repercussions. She would be killed. She only asked to say goodbye to her three sons before the sultan completed the act. But the sultan no longer wanted to kill Scheherazade. Over the course of her ploy to keep herself alive, the sultan had fallen in love with her and her fantastical storytelling. He made her his queen, and peace was restored to the kingdom. Now, we're telling the story of Scheherazade today not because she was a real person. There's no proof that she ever existed. But she's become one of the most well-known women in folklore. She's the focus of the frame story that weaves together 1,000 other folk tales. The collection of stories is commonly known as the Arabian Nights, or the Thousand and One Nights. And it's been around since at least the 9th century. You might know Aladdin or Alibaba, which were adapted from stories from Arabian Nights. Scheherazade may not have walked this earth, but her story, passed around crackling fires written in manuscripts and adapted into films and even an orchestral suite, proves the persisting power of stories to bind people together and even potentially save lives. All month, we're talking about folk heroes. For more information, find us on Facebook and Instagram at Womanica Podcast. Special thanks to Liz Kaplan, my favorite sister and co-creator. Talk to you tomorrow.
