SPEAKER_01: Hello, from Wonder Media Network, I'm Jenny Kaplan, and this is Womanica. This month we're talking about folk heroes. People whose lives and stories took on mythic proportions. On a bleak day in 1990s Vietnam, a young woman arrives at the local prison with a bag in hand. It's a farewell gift for her estranged lover, a crime boss who's been sentenced to death. She's bribed the police to get this close to him. Little do they know they're a mistake. This woman has a secret plan up her sleeve. She always does. Who was this mysterious woman? Let's talk about Dun Ha. Dun Ha was born around 1965 in northern Vietnam. She lived in a busy urban area where crime ran rampant and gangsters ruled. Her older brothers and sisters were petty criminals. By the time Dun Ha was old enough to know what money was, she was stealing it. Dun Ha had some run-ins with the police in the 1980s, but these experiences left her undeterred. In her 20s, she began dating a local crime boss known on the streets as the Warbler. Soon the Warbler's fortunes took a turn for the worse. As his drug addictions and health complications grew, Dun Ha picked up where he left off. She took over his casinos after his death and expanded her underground criminal network. Not too long after the Warbler, Dun Ha started dating another infamous crime boss. This new beau went to prison and was sentenced to death. Dun Ha attempted to free him with a farewell gift, a grenade hidden in a bag to blow open the gates. In the end, the grenade and Dun Ha's farewell gift was a dud, and the plan failed because the jail was too heavily guarded. But Dun Ha's persistence earned her infamy. Suddenly, there was a new queen of crime in town. Dun Ha cut her hair short and took laps around her city on an expensive imported motorcycle, assessing her next moves. Often, a tall, beautiful woman sat on the back of her bike. The two would kiss and act affectionately towards each other while zooming through the city. At the time, it was not common for queer relationships to be displayed openly and proudly. Dun Ha disrupted these social conventions, earning her the nickname Dun the Lesbian. But their relationship reached a breaking point in 1995 when Dun Ha was arrested again. When she got out of jail, she left northern Vietnam for the southern capital of Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh, previously and locally known as Saigon, was run by a notorious gangster, Nam Cam, better known as the Godfather of Saigon. Dun Ha tried to forge an alliance, but they clashed immediately. Nam Cam disliked Dun Ha with a passion. He hated her even more as she kept trying to expand her empire into the south. He reached his wit's end after Dun Ha pulled an elaborate and humiliating stunt. In 2000, Dun Ha sent Nam Cam a present to open at one of his parties. When he opened the box, rats and feces spilled out onto the dance floor. It was a direct provocation, an attempt to shame Nam Cam in front of his friends and followers. Needless to say, he was furious. Soon after that stunt, Dun Ha's boldness caught up to her. Nam Cam quickly retaliated by sending hired guns to kill her. Just after midnight on October 2nd, Dun was shot in the head at an outdoor beer stall. Still, Dun Ha ultimately got the last laugh. Her murder helped spark further investigation into Nam Cam and his many crimes. He was eventually convicted of several charges and sentenced to death, ending his 15-year reign as the Godfather of Saigon. Dun Ha received an elaborate funeral back in northern Vietnam. It's even said that the beautiful woman who once rode on the back of her motorcycle was seen weeping at the ceremony. Dun Ha's bold, unapologetic legacy lives on in the hearts of the many people who continue to visit her graveside today. All month, we're talking about folk heroes.
