SPEAKER_01: If you're a longtime SNL fan, you might know Gilda as one of the original seven cast members of the beloved show. She was an actress and comedian who changed the face of comedy. Gilda was born in Detroit on June 28, 1946 into a prosperous family. Her father, Herman Radner, made his fortune from a brewery in Ontario that he bought in the 1920s. Gilda's mother, Henrietta, was a ballet dancer who was working as a legal secretary until she married Gilda's father. Gilda recalled her childhood as a difficult one. Her mother couldn't stand the winters in Detroit, so Gilda and her brother were dragged to Florida for four months of every year. That disrupted the school year and left Gilda feeling frustrated and unable to develop close friendships. The void of companionship in Gilda's life was filled by her governess, whom she called Dibby. Years later, Dibby would be the model for Gilda's popular SNL character, Emily Lutella. SPEAKER_07: What's all this fuss I keep hearing about violins on television? Now, why don't parents want their children to see violins on television? SPEAKER_01: When Gilda's classmates teased her about being overweight, Dibby gave Gilda her first comedic lesson, telling her to, "'Say you're fat before they can. "'Just make a joke about it and laugh.'" While Gilda had always felt distant from her mother, she was very close with her father. He supported her desire to perform, took her to musicals in downtown Detroit, and gave her dancing lessons. But tragically, Gilda's father died of brain cancer when Gilda was just 14 years old. After his death, Gilda continued to work towards being a performer. She studied at the University of Michigan, where she majored in drama. But before she earned a degree, she dropped out and moved to Toronto with her boyfriend at the time. There, Gilda was cast in the musical, Godspell, before joining the famous Second City comedy troupe. It was there that she met and worked with Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, and Bill Murray. In 1973, Gilda moved to New York City. She joined a handful of her fellow Second City performers in an off-Broadway cabaret called The National Lampoon Show. Two years later, producer Lorne Michaels selected Gilda and some of her Second City friends to be on his new late-night comedy show, in October of that year, Saturday Night Live was born, with Gilda as part of the original cast. Gilda stayed with SNL until 1980 and won an Emmy Award for her work on the show in 1978. When she left, she starred in her first movie, First Family by Buck Henry. And on that set, she met Gene Wilder, later describing their meeting as love at first sight. And in 1984, Gilda and Gene got married and made another movie together called The Woman in Red. Two years later, the couple made their final movie together called Haunted Honeymoon. Later that year, Gilda was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. But Gilda wasn't quite finished sharing her creativity with the world. Between her chemotherapy treatments, she wrote an autobiography called It's Always Something. On May 20th, 1989, Gilda's battle with cancer ended. She passed away with Gene Wilder at her side. Two years later, in 1991, Gilda's cancer psychotherapist founded Gilda's Club, a network of clubhouses where people battling cancer, their friends and families, can come to learn about how to live and love with cancer. The first official club opened in New York City in 2005. Gilda left an indelible mark on the comedic community and greater Hollywood. Her battle with ovarian cancer resulted in more awareness, funding, and research to fight the disease. She lives on not only through the characters she created on SNL, the stories she portrayed in films, and the stand-up she did for years, but also through the people she deeply loved and the lives she profoundly impacted.
