SPEAKER_01: Hello and welcome back. From Wonder Media Network, I'm Jenny Kaplan and this is Encyclopedia Wamanica. In case you're just tuning in, here's the deal. We're taking five minutes a day, every weekday for a year, to tell the story of a different woman from throughout history who you may or may not know about but definitely should. Each month is themed and this month we're talking about dreamers, women who should be remembered for their creative achievements. Today's dreamer is famous, or infamous, for her relationship with another celebrated sculptor, but she should be remembered in her own right. Her strong will, her incredible artistic ability, and her passion were reflected in her groundbreaking work. Let's talk about Camille Claudel. Camille was born in a small French village on December 8th, 1864, into a rich family. She started working with clay at a young age and showed such early promise that in 1881, her father moved the entire family to Paris so Camille could study art. There, she enrolled at the Académie Colorassie. By the time she was 18 years old, Camille was the student of sculptor Alfred Boucher. When he had to leave for Italy, Boucher asked Auguste Rodin, the famous sculptor responsible for the thinker, to take over his students. Camille stood out for her fiery, witty temperament and the sexual themes she liked to explore in her sculptures. Though sexuality in art wasn't particularly taboo at the time, only men were usually permitted to be explicit in their work. Camille's willingness to express lust shocked some critics and most of her family, though her father encouraged her work. After Rodin started overseeing Boucher's students, Rodin and Camille started a love affair that lasted 10 years. The relationship was tumultuous, and it left a mark on both of their careers. Camille often modeled for Rodin or assisted him with the sculpting, and in the late 1880s, Camille sculpted an acclaimed bust of her teacher and lover. After many misunderstandings and disagreements, Camille broke off the relationship. She was eager to forge her own career and differentiate herself from Rodin, and she began to produce even more intimate and vibrant work. Some of her most famous works include The Gossips, a smaller piece featuring a group of women animatedly huddled in the corner trading secrets, and The Wave, an onyx marble wave cresting over three cowering bronze figures. As Camille's career continued, she grew impoverished and increasingly reclusive. She smashed many of the works in her studio to prevent other artists, especially Rodin, from stealing her ideas. She was convinced of a conspiracy against her, writing that there was a, quote, "'molevolent hand working behind the scenes "'to divest me of all my friendships.'" In 1913, when Camille was almost 50, her father passed away. After that, her family admitted Camille to a mental asylum. It's unclear whether Camille was admitted voluntarily. Some assert that her younger brother Paul kept her trapped in the asylum against her will. In 1929, Camille's former friend and fellow sculptor Jesse Lipscomb visited her and insisted that she was fine. Others say that Camille developed schizophrenia. On October 19, 1943, Camille passed away alone at the age of 79. She had been in the psychiatric hospital for 30 years. Though only about 90 of Camille's work survived her destruction, she started to gain recognition after her death. The National Camille Claudel Museum in France opened in 2017, and the Musée Rodin in Paris has a room dedicated to her art. Camille's passion fueled her incredible sculptures, leaving a lasting legacy. Tune in tomorrow for the story of another woman you may not know about but definitely should. We'll be talking about a woman who harnessed her dreams for her art. This month of Encyclopedia Wamanica is brought to you by Casper. Casper mattresses and products let today's dreamers get the sleep they need to turn their ideas into reality. Special thanks to the one and only Liz Kaplan, my favorite sister and the genius researcher behind this amazing collection of women. Talk to you tomorrow.
