Episode Summary

Jennifer Shealy is a top-rated Fiverr seller who has worked full-time on the freelance platform for 4-5 years. She offers digital marketing services like social media ads, product descriptions, and graphic design. Before Fiverr, Jennifer worked a variety of jobs where she was unable to earn more than $15/hour. On Fiverr, Jennifer found new flexibility to work how she wants, care for her aging mother, and make 19% more than the average man on the platform. Fiverr's success managers helped coach her on strategic pricing and other tactics to grow her business. Fiverr celebrates female talent by helping women like Jennifer find new career success and prosperity.

SPEAKER_02: Hello! From Wonder Media Network, I'm Jenny Kaplan, and this is Encyclopedia Womanica. This bonus episode is brought to you by Fiverr. Every Saturday this month, we're talking to modern-day feminists addressing issues that impact women today. In a country where women earn only 79 cents per dollar earned by men, today's feminist is forging her own career path and finding new success. SPEAKER_04: My name is Jennifer Shealy, and I'm a Fiverr top-rated seller, and I've been working full-time for Fiverr for the last, oh, about four or five years. SPEAKER_02: Jennifer is a digital marketing consultant, focusing on things like social media ads, product descriptions, and graphic design. Before coming on to Fiverr, she worked a variety of jobs. SPEAKER_04: You know, I worked probably about over 20 jobs in various sectors, from local government to startups, and what I found is that, you know, I couldn't get past, let's say, like a $15 per hour. I couldn't get past that for the longest time until I got to Fiverr. SPEAKER_02: Freelancing offered Jennifer new flexibility in her career and the ability to work on a level playing field. SPEAKER_04: My favorite thing? That I get to work the way I want to work, right? So, you know, if I was to go into a traditional office today with my short haircut, I'm sure I'm going to get some cutting eyes, and then they're going to tell me to probably put on a dress. And I don't, that's not my style, so I could, you know, sit in my t-shirt and my shorts and, you know, wear the haircut that I want and dye it the way I want and just be myself. It's very flexible, and so that, that's, you know, number one priority. Also, I do have an aging mother, and so that also plays into a role, so if she needs to go and, you know, go to the doctor, which she does, quite often, you know, I'm able to make myself available for that. SPEAKER_02: On Fiverr, women defy national statistics and make 19 percent more than men on average. The platform offers success managers who coach vendors on profile redesigns, strategic pricing, and more. With their help, Jennifer grew her client base. SPEAKER_04: Yeah, because, you know, when you're kind of, you know, working maybe $15 an hour for, you know, 10, 15 years, you just think that that might just be as much as your worth. And then someone comes in and says, hey, girl, you've got this. You are under, you know, pricing yourself. And I'm like, really? And then, you know, then you see and you're like, yeah, I do do a lot of work and I need to get paid for that rather than undercutting myself for myself. SPEAKER_02: Thank you to Fiverr for sponsoring this month of Encyclopedia Wamanica. Fiverr's Marketplace helps the world's feminists get more done with less.
