Bonus Episode: Dakota Rei’s Abortion Story

Episode Summary

This bonus episode, presented by Planned Parenthood, shares an abortion story from Dakota Ray, a youth activist and organizer from San Antonio, Texas. The goal is to help end the stigma around abortion by having open and honest conversations about it. Abortion is very common, with 1 in 4 women in the U.S. having an abortion by age 45. The Turnaway study found that 95% of people who had abortions felt they made the right decision. Getting an abortion is extremely safe - even safer than getting your tonsils out. It does not increase risks of cancer, infertility, or mental health issues. The majority of people who get abortions already have children. And most Americans support keeping abortion legal. Dakota Ray shares her personal experience getting an abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic. She felt supported, with her pronouns acknowledged and indigenous land recognized. Posters showed healthcare access for all. The experience felt welcoming, and she was treated as an equal. People had told her it would be horrible, but it felt like she saved her own life. Dakota wants people to know abortion will always be necessary healthcare, whether the pregnancy was wanted or not. All abortion experiences are valid, regardless of the reason. By sharing stories, people realize they aren't alone. Abortion is valid healthcare. Evidence shows we have convicted innocent people by believing some stories while ignoring others. Fall decorating is easy with Ashley's designs. Harper Wild makes the world's most comfortable bras and underwear.

I'm so excited for today's bonus episode presented by this month's sponsor Planned Parenthood. Throughout this month with Planned Parenthood, we've been aiming to end the stigma around abortion by engaging in conversations about abortion and the people affected by it. Abortion is more common than many people know. Despite what we've been led to believe, a vast majority of Americans support abortion access. The discussions that we're having are important to help break the cultural stigma around abortion, deeply held judgments about people who have abortions and those who provide them. With attacks on abortion rights across the country, it's important that we continue having these conversations because abortion is normal and everyone's experience with abortion is valid, regardless of their reason for having an abortion. There's no shortage of misinformation surrounding this topic, which ultimately fuels the fire and adds to stigma. We know that by sharing abortion stories and sharing accurate information about abortion, we can help decrease the stigma. So with that, here are a few quick facts that you can share with others. One, abortion is really common. In the United States, about one in four women, plus trans and non-binary people, will have an abortion by the age of 45. Think about all the people you know personally who might have gone through this without you even knowing. Not only is abortion common, it's also not a decision people come to regret, like many think. In fact, the Turnaway study found that 95% of participants who had an abortion said they made the right decision. Two, getting an abortion is extremely safe, even safer than getting your tonsils out. And abortions don't increase your risk of cancer, infertility, or mental health issues. There are many anti-abortion activists who will say whatever they can to dissuade people from having abortions. But it's important to have the hard facts and know that it's safe to have an abortion. Three, the majority of people who get abortions are already parents. 59% of the people who have had abortions also had at least one childbirth experience. There's no wrong reason to have an abortion, and already being a parent is a perfectly valid reason. Finally, most people in the US support abortion. A 2022 Gallup poll found that 85% of Americans want abortions to remain legal. There is no state in the country where total abortion bans are popular. The people who pass these restrictive laws are defying the will of the public, because the majority of people want abortion rights and reproductive healthcare rights. With these facts on hand, you're now better equipped to help fight misinformation and propaganda. With that, here's another storyteller from Planned Parenthood, Dakota Ray, a youth activist and organizer from San Antonio, Texas, who shares that all abortion experiences are valid, regardless of the reason for the abortion. I found out I was eight weeks pregnant, and I was heartbroken, I was horrified, I had no clue what to do. So immediately I told my mom, I told my boyfriend, and I was like, what do I do? And my mom was like, just call your local Planned Parenthood and see what they say. The second I got there, I felt so much support from them asking my pronouns to the acknowledgement that their clinic was on indigenous land to the fact that there were posters about healthcare access for every age, gender, religion, race, et cetera. And it genuinely made me feel welcome. I was treated like an equal and like my feelings and my experience mattered. And I was told this was gonna be something horrible, but it felt like, it felt like I saved my life. And people just need to realize that taking away access to abortion isn't gonna solve anything because abortion will always be necessary. Abortion is necessary in life-saving healthcare, both for wanted and unwanted pregnancies. Regardless of what reason you got your abortion, it's valid. I guess I share my abortion story because people need to know that they aren't alone and this is healthcare and it's valid healthcare. Evidence-wise, we have virtually no evidence.
