SPEAKER_01: Hey, listeners, it's Jenny. I'm so excited for the final bonus episode of June with this month's sponsor Planned Parenthood. Over the course of our partnership, we've emphasized the importance of de-stigmatizing abortion, and we've highlighted stories of people from various backgrounds who've had abortions. We've discussed the importance of being inclusive when we talk about abortion and how misinformation and propaganda play a large part in the negative views on abortion in this country. Another incredibly important thing when talking about abortion is knowing how to support someone who's having one. There are many emotions involved, and reminding the person having an abortion that they're supported and loved goes a really long way. With that in mind, Planned Parenthood has a few tips on how you can rally behind someone who's having an abortion. Number one, listen to them. It's your role to listen without judgment when a loved one decides to open up. Whether it's about their plans to get an abortion or to talk about an abortion that they previously had. Two, remind them that you support their decision and love them no matter what. Leading with love and acceptance may help ease any anxiety your loved one has about the decision. Three, help them get accurate information about abortion. The Planned Parenthood website and the staff at Planned Parenthood health centers are two sources of reliable information. They can also talk with a live health educator at Planned Parenthood's free and confidential chat text line which we'll link in the show notes. Four, offer to be there for them on the day of their appointment if they want. If they're having a medical abortion at home, you can offer to stay with them or be nearby during the process for support and help if needed. Five, offer other practical support like driving them home, having pads and pain medicine on hand, getting them food, preparing a comfy place for them to rest or watching their kids if they have any. Six, remind them that there's no right or wrong way to feel about abortion. It's okay to feel guilt. It's okay to feel relief. It's okay to not feel much at all. It's also totally normal to feel all these things at once or at different times. Everyone's experience is different and all feelings are valid. Seven, give them space if they need it. Eight, don't tell anyone unless they ask you to. Though abortion is nothing to be ashamed of, it's up to them to decide who they tell. Nine, if they're having a really hard time or need more support, offer to help find them a professional they can talk with. The staff at their nearest Planned Parenthood Health Center may be able to connect them with local resources. Exhale, all options and Abortions Welcome are other great places to get information and support. These resources will all be linked in the show notes. With these tools, you can help support someone who opens up to you about their abortion. It's all about letting them know they're loved and supported and have people in their corner. And now, we're gonna hear Anoushia's story. Anoushia is a doctor and a Planned Parenthood storyteller who's helping to break abortion stigma by sharing their story. SPEAKER_05: Nine years ago, I had a D&E, and I am so grateful that I had access to medical care and abortion care. And I'm so grateful that that day, I went home to grieve, deeply grieve my circumstances, but never, never my choice. I never regretted my decision, and that's how I know it's the right one, because there's no one single reason that is the right reason. It took me a really long time to say I had an abortion, and even this is me as someone who is a doctor, and I know that it's up to people like me to break the stigma around abortion and to actually say the word, this is what happened. This is an abortion. My story is just one story in the tapestry of abortion stories and the diverse circumstances of why people seek abortion care is the reason why we need to have reproductive freedom, because it is your right to have safe healthcare. Evidence-wise, we had virtually no evidence.
