Bonus: Behind the Scenes

Episode Summary

The host Liz brings her sister Diana on the show to provide listeners a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Encyclopedia Wamanica. Diana explains that she has always loved history and wanted to learn more about forgotten women from the past. After leaving her job, she spent over a year extensively researching and sourcing stories about diverse, inspirational women across different time periods and locations. Once Diana compiled the stories, she worked with Liz to organize the women into monthly themes like pioneers and dreamers. They had to make tough decisions about which stories to cut for now and alphabetize the rest. The next step was scripting, editing, and recording the episodes, as well as finding archival audio clips and music to supplement the narratives. Each roughly 5-minute episode requires a lot of work to pull together. On top of creating the episodes, Liz explains that they also have to handle the marketing, sales, and business side of the podcast to keep it financially viable. The hosts emphasize how much effort goes into researching, producing, and promoting each episode of Encyclopedia Wamanica. They thank Casper mattresses for sponsoring the show this month and making it possible for them to continue shining a light on forgotten women from history.

Despite the fact that the show is quite short, there's a lot that goes into each segment. You may be wondering, how do we put all of this together? What goes into every episode? I decided it would be fun to bring my sister Liz on air to talk about our process. So Liz, what's your process? SPEAKER_03: Hi there. I've always loved history and I am also a bit of a nerd. After leaving a job I've been at for years, I decided to use my newfound free time to look into the stories of great forgotten women from history and was deeply inspired by the vastness of what I found. Once we decided this might be interesting to other people as well, I used the research skills I learned in college and grad school to source the stories of incredible women for a year plus some. I wanted to make sure that we had a diverse group of women too. So I took pains to ensure we had a wide variety of women from around the globe and across time periods. Not only is this historically representative, but there's something special about listening to the story of a woman who for whatever reason, you can personally identify with. And we wanted to maximize that opportunity for all of our listeners. Then we did a lady draft. Yeah, we sorted the women into different categories like pioneers, which you heard last month and dreamers, which you'll hear all of this month. SPEAKER_08: Once we had all the women divided into months, we had to decide which stories we were gonna cut for now and then alphabetize the rest. Then we had to script, edit, record, find archival audio, weave all of that together with music and cut it down to about five minutes. Bottom line, it's a ton of work to keep the show going. And we didn't even talk about the marketing and sales that goes into keeping us afloat. When it's time for us to go to sleep, it's vital that we sleep well. You can probably tell that we're obsessed with telling the stories of experts and the people at Casper are experts in creating mattresses.
